Google DeepMind Details Gemini for Science

Google DeepMind announced Gemini for Science, launching experimental tools on Google Labs, enterprise previews on Google Cloud, and Science Skills in Google Antigravity.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
  • Google DeepMind introduced Gemini for Science with three experimental tools on Google Labs: Hypothesis Generation, Computational Discovery, and Literature Insights.
  • Validation research papers for Co-Scientist and Empirical Research Assistance were published in Nature.
  • Enterprise clients including BASF, Klarna, Daiichi Sankyo, Bayer Crop Science, and U.S. National Labs are testing the models in private preview.
  • Science Skills in Google Antigravity connects to more than 30 life science databases, including UniProt and the AlphaFold Database.

Google DeepMind and Google Research have introduced Gemini for Science, a suite of experimental AI tools and features intended to accelerate discovery across scientific fields. Announced during Google I/O 2026, the initiative includes three prototype tools on Google Labs, enterprise features on Google Cloud, and specialized workflows for desktop research.

The experimental tools on Google Labs focus on three core steps of the scientific method. Hypothesis Generation, built with Co-Scientist, uses a multi-agent idea tournament to propose, debate, and evaluate research ideas with verified citations. Computational Discovery uses AlphaEvolve and Empirical Research Assistance to evaluate thousands of code variants simultaneously for tasks such as epidemiology and solar forecasting. Literature Insights uses Google NotebookLM to organize scientific papers into structured, searchable tables and build overview artifacts such as reports, slide decks, and audio or video summaries.

Enterprise testing and Nature papers

Google DeepMind said research papers validating Co-Scientist and Empirical Research Assistance were published today in Nature. Meanwhile, enterprise clients are using the systems in private preview through Google Cloud. BASF is using AlphaEvolve to optimize supply chains, while Klarna applies it to machine learning models. Bayer Crop Science, Daiichi Sankyo, and U.S. National Labs participating in the Department of Energy's Genesis Mission are using Co-Scientist for research challenges.

Life science tools and institutional pilots

For desktop research, Google released Science Skills within its Google Antigravity agentic platform. The specialized bundle connects to over 30 life science tools and databases, including UniProt, the AlphaFold Database, InterPro, and the AlphaGenome API. In internal testing, researchers used Science Skills to shorten structural bioinformatics and genomic workflows from hours to minutes, uncovering potential mechanisms for a rare genetic disease caused by AK2 gene mutations.

Google is also working with more than 100 academic and research institutions to test its systems, including Stanford University on liver fibrosis, Imperial College London on antimicrobial resistance, and The Crick Institute on a multi-year effort. Additionally, the company established pilots with conferences such as ICML, STOC, and NeurIPS to test agentic peer review tools, including ScholarPeer and the Paper Assistant Tool.
